Materials that are used for structural purposes should meet several requirements. In most cases it is important that they should be hard, durable, fire-resistant and easily fastened together. The most commonly used materials are timber, stone, concrete, steel, brick, light materials, glass, plastics. They differ in hardness, durability and fire-resistance.

All building materials are divided into three main groups:

    1. Main building materials such as stones and artificial stones timber and metals.

    2. Binding materials such as lime, gypsum and cement.

    3. Secondary or auxiliary materials which are used for the interior parts of buildings.

We use many buildings materials for bearing structures. Binding materials are used for making artificial stone and for joining different planes. For the interior finish of the building we use secondary materials. If the materials do not require any changes in their chemical structures they are known as natural building materials. They are stone, clay, sand, lime and timber. Cement, clay products and concrete are examples of artificial building materials. Now building materials are changed into units of assembly, prefabricated or precuts construction members.

The new materials of construction are characterized by increased strength. Structural, insulating and surfacing requirements are combined in a single system. As a result a greater speed in housing construction has been achieved .

1.What kinds of the most important building materials do you know?

2. Do building materials differ from each other?

3.What groups do we divide building materials into?

4.What natural and artificial materials do you know?

Lime and sand

Lime and sand are natural materials. Both of them are used for producing artificial building materials such as cement, motar and concrete blocks.

Of the several varieties of lime, that used chiefly for brickwork and masonry is known as hydraulic lime. It is produced from limestone or chalk which is burnt in the kiln for 3 or 4 days, when it is ready to be made into motar.

Hydraulic lime contains a large percentage of lime silicate, aluminates that gives the materials the property of hardening under water, that at the same time it contains so much free lime that the burned mass will slake upon the addition of water.

Sand obtained from pits or quarries is the best for motar because of its angularity (called “sharp”): failing this, that from river banks or beds is used. Sea sand is unsuitable for motar as it contains salts which attract and retain moisture, in addition to producing a whitish power or efflorescence which discolors the brickwork or masonry. Sand should be well graded, clean sharp and free from boam, clay or other impurity. Dirty sand should never be used as it may reduce the adhesive value of the motar considerably. And in order to insure a clean sand it is frequently specified that it should be washed.

Masonry-

Motar-

Suddenly I am famous

And people know my name

I have got a thousand girls just wait

And therefore it’s a shame

That my heart has been captured

By your funny little smile.

And finally I’m happy

If only for a while.

People call me stupid

For treating you like a queen

But I don’t even worry

Because you’re my unforeseen

And I hope that you’ll be with me

If only in my dreams

But here you are next to me

And you’re glad.or so it seems

And I don’t know for shure

Where this is going

Still I hope for more and more

Because who would know that you

Would treat me like a boy

And I treat you like a girl

In this funny little world

Don’t promise me for ever

Just love me day by day,

No one knows the future

We’re young, by that’s ok

Cause you’ll always be part of me

Whatever life will bring

And people have to bear with you

This silly song I sing

Your boyfriends might be angry,

My girlfriends might be blue.

But no one can deny it,

From now on I love you.

And I have to say it’s new to me.

This feeling in my heart .

Guess I’ve been kind of lonely

And you have been kind of smart.

And I don’t know for shure

Where this is going

Still I hope for more and more

Because who would know that you

Would treat me like a boy
